I believe that the people who seek therapy are among the bravest — not because their lives are the hardest, but because they've chosen to look inward with honesty and intention.

What is an expat?

'Expat' typically refers to someone living outside their home country by choice — often for work, partnership, or adventure. It's an imperfect word that doesn't capture everyone's experience, and it tends to be applied to some people and not others, often along lines of nationality, race, and economic privilege.

I use it as a shorthand — but my door is open to anyone navigating the complexity of life outside their home country, regardless of how the world labels their journey.

Not an expat?

You don't have to be living abroad to find your way here. While much of my work centres on the expat experience, I work with a wide range of clients navigating all kinds of transitions — personal, relational, professional, and everything in between.

What matters most is that you're looking for a thoughtful, warm, and engaged therapeutic relationship. If you're curious whether we might be a good fit, I'd love to hear from you.

About Me

While I enjoy supporting adults across the lifespan, much of my clinical work over the past nearly two decades has been with teens and young adults, particularly within school settings. I bring a deep respect for this stage of life and the unique transitions, questions, and pressures that often come with it. I have worked with young people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and socio-economic contexts, supporting them in navigating emotions, identity, relationships, and change.

Alongside this, I have provided virtual therapy to adults, often during significant moments of transition — whether related to relocation, identity, relationships, or life direction. I am drawn to this work and the opportunity to support people as they move through periods that are both challenging and meaningful.

I'm a solid x-ennial, raised in Seattle by classical musicians. Evangelical culture was part of the context of my early life, and stepping away from it became a meaningful part of my journey — one that helped me reclaim a grounded sense of hope and trust in the world and in people.

I'm currently living in my ninth country. Having lived across cultures and contexts deeply informs how I understand identity, belonging, transition, and what it means to build a sense of home in new places.

I am part of a bicultural, biracial, and blended family. Because of this, examining my own internalized and conditioned biases as a white woman, mother, and partner is not only a professional responsibility — it's also deeply personal. I see this ongoing reflection as essential to showing up with humility, care, and respect in our therapeutic work together.

While I identify as cisgender and generally straight, allyship with the queer community is central to my core values. I am committed to creating an affirming, respectful space for LGBTQ+ clients.

Jen Kantor, LICSW

"I understand intimately what it feels like to arrive somewhere unfamiliar, to rebuild a sense of self in a new place, and to carry multiple worlds inside you at once."

Person-centered and relational
at the core.

Because, as Irvin Yalom put it, "it's the relationship that heals." I integrate evidence-based frameworks tailored to you — not applied as a formula. My work is shaped equally by professional training and lived experience, including my own life across cultures and in transition.

I specialize in

  • Adolescents (12+) and adults navigating the globally mobile experience
  • Identity, belonging, and questions of "home"
  • Anxiety, depression, and emotional overwhelm
  • Life transitions — relocation, adolescence, relationship and family changes
  • Blended family dynamics
  • LGBTQ+ affirming support
  • Exploring identity, privilege, and lived experience

How I work

My work is grounded in a person-centered, relational approach. I believe that meaningful change happens within a safe, trusting relationship — creating a space where you feel genuinely seen, heard, and understood is at the heart of how I work.

I also hold a deep appreciation for the privilege of being invited into someone's story. Therapy often means stepping into vulnerable, complex, and meaningful chapters of a person's life, and I approach this with care, curiosity, and humility.

While my approach is grounded in professional training, it is also shaped by my lived experiences — my sensitivity to identity, belonging, and the complexities of navigating change, particularly for those living across cultures or in transition.

Above all, my aim is to offer a collaborative, compassionate space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace, deepen your understanding of yourself, and move toward greater clarity, connection, and ease.

My training includes

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Motivational Interviewing

Therapy for Teenagers
Online worldwide

Teenagers are navigating one of the most complex periods of human development. Add an international move, a new school, or a life between cultures — and that complexity deepens. I bring clinical expertise and genuine warmth to this work.

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression
  • Identity and self-esteem
  • Social difficulties and friendship challenges
  • School pressure and academic stress
  • Third Culture Kid (TCK) experience
  • Expat transitions and cultural adjustment
  • Family transitions
  • Emotion regulation
  • LGBTQ+ affirming support

My approach with teens is collaborative and youth-centered — I follow their lead, respect their autonomy, and work to create a space where they feel safe to be honest. I have worked extensively with adolescents throughout my career, in clinical settings across multiple countries.

A note on consent: For clients under 18, parental or guardian consent is required before we begin — regardless of the client's location. I'm happy to discuss how this process works and what it looks like in practice. Please reach out with any questions.

Life has a way of asking questions we didn't expect — about who we are, where we belong, what we want. I work with adults during significant moments of transition, with a person-centered, relational approach.

  • Expat transitions and cultural adjustment
  • Identity, belonging, and questions of "home"
  • Life transitions — relocation, career, relationship changes
  • Anxiety, depression, and emotional overwhelm
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Grief and loss
  • Third Culture Kid (TCK) adult experience
  • Blended family dynamics
  • LGBTQ+ affirming support
  • Exploring identity, privilege, and lived experience

My approach is person-centered and relational. The therapeutic relationship itself is one of the most powerful tools we have — echoing Irvin Yalom's idea that "it's the relationship that heals." I work at your pace, guided by what you need rather than a fixed formula. All sessions conducted online.

Coaching for Social Workers
International school transitions · Online · Free discovery call

This coaching is designed for US-trained social workers who are looking to move abroad and transition into the world of international schools. Whether you're exploring the idea or actively preparing applications, I support you with both the practical and emotional sides of making an international move.

Please note: Coaching services are distinct from therapy and do not constitute a therapeutic or clinical relationship. No clinical records are kept for coaching clients.

  • Career clarity — finding the right international school roles for your background
  • Navigating international school systems and application processes
  • Credential recognition and licensing considerations for US social workers
  • Preparing for cultural transitions and building sustainable routines abroad
  • The personal side — values, identity, relationships, and what a life overseas actually looks like

I've made this transition myself — moving from working as a therapist in a Seattle public school to providing counseling in private international schools, first in Brazil and now in Switzerland. I also shared more about this journey on a podcast with The Traveling Therapist, for those who want a fuller picture of what this path can look like in real life.

Availability

Coaching is available to US-trained social workers living in the United States who are seeking to work in international school settings abroad.

Is this coaching only about jobs, or about the bigger life transition too?

Both. Working in international schools is as much a life shift as a career move. We'll look at the whole picture — values, identity, relationships, logistics, and sustainability — so the move you're making actually aligns with the life you want to build.

Will my US social work degree or license be recognized abroad?

It depends on the country and the school. International schools vary widely in what they require — some prioritize US credentials, others have their own frameworks. We'll map out what applies to your specific situation so you know exactly where you stand and what steps to take.

What does coaching actually look like?

We meet online for 50 or 90-minute sessions, depending on what works best for you. Sessions are structured but flexible — we'll set priorities together and adjust as your plans develop. Some people come with a very specific goal; others are still figuring out what they want. Both are welcome.

Do I need prior school experience to work in international schools?

Not necessarily. Many international schools value clinical experience in other settings — community mental health, hospitals, private practice — especially when paired with strong cross-cultural skills. We'll look honestly at your background and how to position it effectively for the roles you're targeting.

Insurance & reimbursement

I am currently an out-of-network provider, which means I do not bill insurance companies directly. Many clients choose to pay out of pocket and find the flexibility this offers — in terms of scheduling, confidentiality, and the ability to work across borders — well worth it.

US-based insurance

I can provide you with a monthly superbill — an itemized receipt including my license number, session details, and relevant codes — which you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many PPO plans offer partial reimbursement for out-of-network mental health services. I recommend calling the member services number on your insurance card to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits before we begin.

International health insurance

Many expats carry international health insurance through providers such as Cigna Global, Aetna International, Allianz Care, BUPA Global, or AXA International. These policies sometimes reimburse for sessions with US-licensed clinicians. I can provide superbills for you to submit directly to your insurer — please check your policy or contact your provider to confirm your mental health benefits.

Swiss insurance (LAMal)

Swiss basic health insurance does not currently cover therapy with foreign-licensed clinicians. If you have Swiss supplementary insurance (LCA), it is worth checking with your provider as policies vary.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt from your provider that includes the information your insurance company needs to process an out-of-network reimbursement claim — including session dates, service codes, and provider license details. You submit it directly to your insurer.

Key facts
Out-of-network provider — no direct billing
Monthly superbills available upon request
PPO plans may offer partial reimbursement
International insurers (Cigna Global, Aetna, Allianz, BUPA, AXA) may reimburse
Swiss LAMal does not cover foreign-licensed clinicians

Not sure about your coverage? I recommend calling the member services number on your insurance card and asking specifically about out-of-network mental health benefits before we begin.
